Promoted Trending Twitter Topics – Did You Lose Some Power Over What is Trending in Social Media? Who Calls the Last Shots?
Recently, within the last couple of months, Twitter arose with the introduction to Promoted Trending Topics! HUH? WHAT?
If I Only Had All The Power To Choose The Trending Topics!!! AHA!
From what I understand by reading a couple other websites is that large corporations are paying twitter to pick and choose what a trending topic is.
Let’s think about this for a moment!
Up until this attempt to revolutionize the way trends are made (a very stupid one at that), nonetheless THE PEOPLE CHOSE THE TRENDING TOPICS! So, I ask you: Are you losing control over what is trending?
Furthermore, Does this take from your rights? Does YOUR SAY in the matter not even “well matter” anymore?
Let me assure you that your opinion is still very very very much important, because even though twitter plans on generating thousands of dollars from this feature, YOU are still in control! Stand up now!
Let’s focus on some “words” here:
How can a Trending Topic be a Trending Topic BEFORE its Promoted to the masses in whom make it a Trending Topic?
It can be a “promoted topic” or a “trending topic” however the only way I can see possible to have a Genuine Promoted Trending Topic is to have a team of “tweeting promoters” that FORCE IT TO BECOME A TRENDING TOPIC, and even then you would have to make it a trending topic FOR REAL before you could call it one.
You cannot just say, “I want this to be a trending topic so go forth and may it be” and expect the mountains to move, the sky to shift, blah blah blah. It takes massive action on the account of a large population of people. AHA! (so that’s why they plaster the promoted “so called trending topics” at the top where you’re tweeting). Folks, THE TRUTH IS … It’s NOT a trending topic until YOU make it one! HaHa, I bet the money thirsty twitter executives don’t like that idea too much. They want to be in control. Just don’t let them buy your vote 
LOL – No I’m serious!
“Word of Mouth” and publicity are known to be so much more powerful than paid advertising, so who calls the shots?
Like I said, “Don’t let them buy your vote” …

You make some interesting points here Curtis, however we all knew this stuff was coming on Twitter. I would deem it appropriate because #1, it’s an incredible way to generate massive traffic, fast and #2 because they display it as a “Promoted Tweet” thus letting the user know that its a paid ad. If it were the opposite then I would have some problems with that…

I would guess that it was mostly a money-driven move, wouldn’t you? It will be interesting to see how this unfolds and what they do to make it be a trending topic.

This is an interesting point. You would think that those who run Twitter wouldn’t be taken in by the idea that they can determine what a trending topic is.
Ultimately, I guess it still comes down to “Power to the People”! Good thing.
